Melbourne sees supply of six new suburbs

Melbourne has been expanded even further with boundary changes for housing development under a new announcement from planning minister Matthew Guy.

The 5,958 hectares to be included under the Urban Growth Boundary has been supported by the local councils and the State Government, Mr Guy explained at the ‘Creating Melbourne’s New Suburbs Forum’.

He explained that the reason for these changes was to help maintain Victoria’s housing affordability, and will see Melbourne’s north growth corridor moving up to Wallan, past Craigieburn.

These changes will create six new suburbs housing 100,000 people over the next 30 years.

Along with a suburb in Sunbury, areas included under these plans include Merrifield West, Lockerbie, Lockerbie North, Rockbank North and Manor Lakes.

The Housing Industry Association has responded with positivity to the announcement, and regional executive director Gil King said that it was good news for first time buyers.

“This will assist in reducing pressure on housing prices, and providing more affordable housing – meaning first home buyers might be able to enter the market”.

“This welcome initiative is only part of the solution which, as the Minister has acknowledged, includes development opportunities for vacant land in the inner suburbs close to the CBD,” said Mr King.
