Housing injection to cater for 5,000, South Hedland

Western Australia’s economic growth has resulted in an upcoming housing injection for more than 5,000 people in South Hedland, announced regional development and lands minister Brendon Grylls.

The State Government initiative underpinning this injection involves the development of seven residential investment opportunities worth more than $1.5 billion.

One, the Western Edge project will bring an extra 2,300 dwellings to the area, which should help with the 1,000 extra people moving into the state every week.

Further land and housing developments are very important in supporting the growing population, Mr Grylls explained.

“In responding to the housing needs of the Pilbara, LandCorp is launching expressions of interests for a grouped housing site at Baynton West in Karratha, which will deliver much needed housing for the town, and the 226ha master planned community at Western Edge,” he said.

“With the potential to deliver more than 2,300 affordable dwellings and house a permanent population of 5,000, the Western Edge represents a major solution to Hedland’s current housing problems.”

Landcorp will also release infill opportunities in five “sought-after” metropolitan areas, including Mosman Park, Coogee, North Coogee, Girrawheen and Craigie.

An activity centre in Claremont, of 4.5ha, and five missed use lots at Cockburn Central are also on the cards, along with varied opportunities in Alkimos.
