Suburb's $80 million railway station approved
A surge in population has prompted the WA government to approve an $80 million railway station, bus interchange and 2,000 car park project in Perth’s southern suburbs.
The suburb of Aubin Grove has seen increased demand for public transport due to growing interest in the area, causing the government to prioritize this recently announced project.
Premier Colin Barnett said that this decision is based on extreme growth projected into the area over the next 15 years.
“The latest population forecasts for Western Australia show an increase of about 400,000 people by 2026, with part of that increase expected from suburbs such as Aubin Grove, Atwell, Hammond Park, Mandogalup and Wandi,” Mr Barnett said.
For those choosing investments in the area, the best spots will be walking distance from the proposed site for the station.
Transport minister Troy Buswell indicated that both the station and the bus interchange would be near the Gibbs and Russell roads Kwinana Freeway exits.
“Providing a station between the Cockburn Central and Kwinana stations is our priority as a result of increased land development in the surrounding areas and the significantly higher demand for rail than previously projected,” explained Mr Buswell of the decision.
“Public Transport Authority analysis shows about 30 per cent of the parking demand at Cockburn Central is from areas within the catchment of the new Aubin Grove station,” he said.
The Master Plan of the station is set to be completed by the end of this year, and will include projected timelines for when completion is expected.
