A metropolitan region scheme amendment will facilitate future development for the first stage of Western Australia's Keralup housing project, in the City of Rockingham, according to planning minister John Day.

This new community should attract a projected 90,000 people within the next 50 years.

“During the past several years, substantial planning, drainage and environmental investigations have been undertaken for the whole Keralup landholding,” he said.

“The proposal to develop a new urban community of up to 90,000 people in the next 40 to 50 years is in line with the principles set out in the Directions 2031 and Beyond framework.”

Keralup currently forms an important component of the state’s housing affordability strategy and will be aimed at meeting anticipated growth from the Southern Metropolitan and Peel regions.

Current plans are for commencement in 2014/2015.

The City of Rockingham Council's report 'Vision for Keralup' indicates that a wide range of housing, including Department of Housing properties, and will include a substantial public transport component.

"Light rail [is] to be an essential component of project design and introduced into Keralup to support intended development densities and underpin
sustainable urban development over the long term," the report states.
