Next year signals big changes for an Adelaide area, with many of the first electric rail services to undergo construction, according to recent announcements.

The four-year program of rebuilding the metropolitan rail network will begin in 2013, indicated Transport and Infrastructure minister, Patrick Conlon.

With funds set aside in the state budget, the new infrastructure is looking increasingly certain with delays and closures announced on the Noarlunga line, Tonsley Line and the Belair line for building.

The $2 billion electrification program includes 12 new and upgraded stations along these lines and the Gawler and Outer Harbor lines.

A $110 million junction at Goodwood will be built in the first half of next year.

The line will be electrified to Seaford.

“When complete, the junction will reduce traffic delays on Cross Rd by up to five minutes,” Mr Conlon said.

“The rail yard closure, which is occurring during the quietest time of the year, will also allow significant work to be done on the Adelaide Convention Centre Redevelopment, greatly reducing the overall impact of the project on our rail network and passengers.”
