One area in Victoria is set to open up for tourism access and business interests from overseas, according to a recent announcement.

Avalon Airport has been backed as the state’s second international passenger airport, premier Ted Baillieu said on Friday.

The government will amend the lease for the airport to allow the terminal to be built, overcoming the problems noted in 2008 when the plan for the airport was announced.

The design, planning, land acquisition and preliminary construction of a rail link to the airport has seen $50 million in funding committed to the project.

A $3 million pipe fuel-line has also been committed from Shell, Geelong.

Aviation minister, Gordon Rich-Phillips, noted that this is an important development for the area.

“The development of Avalon Airport is a priority project for the Coalition Government because we see it as a major regional economic development initiative for Wyndham, Greater Geelong and western Victoria,” he said.

“It’s also a great economic advantage for Victoria, because its means we will have two major international, curfew-free airports in the state paving the way for more competition in the state’s aviation industry and boosting tourism access to western Victoria.”

The project is also set to interest investors with increasing jobs, improved goods and supply service chains and greater access to both national and international markets.
