An Independent Planning Commission was established yesterday in one territory in response to high property prices and rents.

The Northern Territory’s chief minister, Terry Mills, introduced legislation yesterday to ensure the establishment of the Planning Commission to help prepare for growth.

The commission will prepare strategic town plans, identify locations for transport and utility corridors, and sites for ‘essential service’ facilities.

“I know our soaring house prices and rents are major issues currently facing Territory families,” Mr Mills said.

“That’s why one of the key priorities of the Planning Commission will be the timely release of land, to increase the supply of affordable housing.”

Part of this is to ensure that the youth population do not move to other states and territories as a result of affordability issues.

It will also advise the planning minister on significant development proposals.

“The Commission will involve the community at the earliest stage and plans will be open for extensive consultation,” Mr Mills said.

“A work plan to address immediate priorities has also already been drawn up and includes infill development; future residential development opportunities around Fannie Bay, Ludmilla and Nightcliff, and development of a greater Darwin land use plan.”
