Developments to be restricted in one area

Riverfront developments are set to be limited to protect the area from “inappropriate” construction, according to recent announcements.

The Victorian government is looking to protect the Maribyrnong river corridor from inappropriate development, similar to plans outlined for the Yarra river, said planning minister, Matthew Guy.

Tighter control will be placed over building height, setback from the river, sight coverage and vegetation removal in what will be the strongest ever level of planning policy for the two river corridors.

The changes will be made under amendment VC96, which was gazetted on Monday 15 October.

“VC96 will recognise the environmental, landscape and cultural values of the Maribyrnong river as well as its aesthetic, open space, recreation and tourism importance,” Mr Guy said.

“Strategic planning work for implementation by local government will commence shortly and is expected to be finalised by mid 2013.”

This is part of a $3.6 million government plan to revitalize the Maribyrnong river area.

These changes will, however, come after the release of FGR Architects' Sunset Waters, for who the water is the main attraction of the location.

"The ability to see the water upon entry into each dwelling is key to this project and continues from entry through to the main living area, from which the view spans over the grand terrace," said FGR director, Feras Raffoul.
