Plans to ease affordable housing crisis in WA

A registration of interest (ROI) process for service workers' housing in Newman has been announced by WA regional development and lands minister Brendon Grylls, and housing minister, Terry Redman.

Newman is part of WA's Pilbara region, which is seeing extensive growth, as SPI Online reported yesterday.

Mr Grylls said the registrations from businesses would help the state government to more accurately assess demand for affordable housing.

“The lack of affordable housing in Newman has a big impact on many industries, including retail, tourism, health, education and hospitality,” he said.

“The ROI will give the government important information to help plan and implement a solution to ease the local accommodation situation.”

Mr Grylls said Newman’s town centre improvements and further housing options would help realise the Pilbara Cities vision for the community, by creating a place where people wanted to live, work and invest.

Housing minister, Terry Redman, said the Department of Housing had been working to deliver service workers’ accommodation in regional communities under the Affordable Housing Strategy 2010-2020 and Royalties for Regions Affordable Housing.

“The government strongly encourages Newman businesses which fit the eligibility criteria to register their interest online at the Department of Housing website,” Mr Redman said.

The ROI will close at 5pm on January 18, 2013.
