Darwin is expecting to receive a significant housing boost after several sites have been identified for the roll-out of land and affordable housing.

The government have identified Crown land that has potential for over a thousand homes, and are currently seeking and assessing subdivision proposals to pave way for the homes.

They are also cutting red tape to trim the assessment process of development applications in half.

This comes as a part of the government’s plans to deliver 2,000 affordable homes in the Northern Territory over the next four years, which will be rented to skilled workers for 30 per cent below the median rent.

Chief minister Adam Giles announced that a team of project management experts will drive the development of land into streets and houses.

“The City Gate development at Daly and Wood Streets is an example of where a developer is interested in working with the government for some units to be leased and then rented at the subsidised rate,” Mr Giles said.

“City Gate will include a total of 325 one- and two-bedroom dwellings with around 10 per cent to be included as part of Real Housing for Growth.”

The 1.45 hectare Sports House site in Fannie Bay, Tomaris Court in the CBD, Runge Street public housing, Berrimah Farm and the NTG Fleet site have also been identified for future development.

Meanwhile, minister for housing as well as lands, planning and the environment, Peter Chandler said the government has already received significant interest from developers and banks.

“We have already received a total of 160 inquiries from developers interested in being a part of Real Housing for Growth and several banks have been working with the Housing Department to get these projects off the ground,” Mr Chandler said.
