Opposition leader Tony Abbott has pledged to pump half a billion dollars into Adelaide to upgrade the city's major road infrastructure, if the coalition wins the September election.

The upgrade of the North-South Road Corridor will link the expanding residential growth areas of Adelaide and increase the productivity and liveability of the city.

In an address to the South Australian Federal Campaign Rally in Adelaide, Mr Abbott told his supporters that the coalition plans to deliver modern infrastructure that Australia needs.

“I have already made some big announcements about the economic infrastructure that would start to go within 12 months of a Coalition government being elected,” Mr Abbott said.

“I want to see cranes over our city. I want to see bulldozers on the ground.”

The $500 million commitment, as a part of the Coalition’s plan to provide funding for major road projects across Australia, would be directed to the upgrade of the South Road where it connects to the Southern Expressway, as recommended by the Darlington Transport Study.

During the speech, Mr Abbott also told supporters the coalition will create the economic conditions to help the Olympic Dam mine project proceed.

“I can’t promise that Olympic Dam will go head, but I can promise that there will be no obstacles from government that will impede its process,” Mr Abbott said.

“No obstacles from government that will impede its process and that means that South Australia will have a fighting chance of becoming, once more, one of the richest states in this great Commonwealth.”
