Mining towns in Western Australia and exclusive enclaves in Sydney dominated the list compiled by RP Data.

Port Hedland in the Pilbara region took out the top spot, with a weekly median rent of $1,775.

However, data from SQM suggests the local rental market is volatile.

House rents in this postcode have fallen by 14.2 per cent over the year and the vacancy rate is at 6.7 per cent.

Nearby Newman is in a similar position. Though RP Data reports the median rent is $1,500 per week, SQM figures show house rents have dropped by more than 32 per cent over the past 12 months.

Other Pilbara towns such as South Hedland, Baynton and Nickol all recorded rents between $1,100 and $1,350 per week.

On the other side of the country, Sydney’s salubrious inner-suburbs also raked in the cash.

Mosman was the city's most pricey rental suburb, with a median of $1,500 weekly.

Woollahra in the east also ranked highly at $1,300 per week.

Searforth in the north east and Roseville and St Ives in the north west rounded out the list, with weekly rents between $1,000 and $1,100.
