Sustainable housing gets govt boost

The federal government has backed the Green Building Council of Australia's (GBCA's) Green Star - Communities rating tool with a sponsorship announcement.

The support of the government strengthens the Green Star - Communities project, with the project now having secured financial support from federal, state and local governments, including every government land development organisation in the country.

Minister for infrastructure and transport Anthony Albanese said the project will reinforce the Australian government's aspirations for more productive, sustainable and liveable cities.

"Green Star - Communities will support COAG's capital cities reforms in terms of addressing nationally significant issues such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, matters of national environmental significance, identifying priorities for investment and policy efforts by governments, providing an effective framework for private sector investment and innovation, and encouraging world-class urban design and architecture," he said.

The Green Star - Communities project is set to become a national voluntary rating tool to encourage best practice planning, design and construction of communities, precincts and places across Australia.

Chief Executive of the GBCA Romilly Madew described the Australian Government's sponsorship of Green Star - Communities as a defining moment for the future planning, design and construction of communities and cities across Australia.

"We are very proud to be leading a project that will involve all three levels of government working collaboratively with industry to establish best practice benchmarks for planning, designing and constructing the places and spaces that make up our cities."
