Supply to increase, Tasmania

An increase in the supply of affordable accommodation for elderly Tasmanians is set to enter the North West coast, the State Government has confirmed.

State-owned land and $1 million worth of funding has been offered to build homes for the elderly.

“This project will deliver more high-quality and affordable homes for elderly Tasmanians in the North West,” said the Minister for Human Services, Cassy O’Connor.

“The State Government is taking action to prepare for the future and ensure we have adequate affordable accommodation for our elderly people,” Ms O'Connor said.

Not-for-profit organisations are being given the chance to apply for funding to develop on the land.

The land parcels are in East Devonport, Ulverstone, Burnie and Wynyard.

“This is a great opportunity for organisations to buy highly desirable land and apply for funding to develop elderly accommodation.

“This project will not only provide affordable housing for the region but also inject some much-needed investment.

“It is another important step forward in improving how we deliver affordable housing through partnerships with the non-government sector,” she said.

An information session will be held in January 2012, with expressions of interest open until late February 2012.
