Building regulations should be retained

The retention of the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) has been advocated by the Western Australian Government during a recent senate standing legislation committee.

Keeping the federal building industry specific laws will assist in ensuring that action is taken against building officials breaching the law.

Commerce Minister Simon O’Brien said that the Federal Government’s intention to lessen the legal requirements should be a concern to all of Western Australia.

The Federal Labor Party have been able to pass legislation in the lower house to abolish the ABCC.

Mr O’Brien encouraged rejection of new legislation changes that look to abolish the ABCC and reduce penalties for unlawful strike action within three years time.

“We need a tough cop on the beat - like the ABCC - to put a stop to unions and their officials who disregard the rule of law.”
