Property and romance: Where are the suburbs with the most singles?

Featuring 13 of Australia’s top 20 single suburbs, Sydney is emerging as the go-to city for buyers seeking a forever home and forever heart.

A new special Valentine’s Day report by Ray White analysed which suburbs across the country had the most bachelors and single ladies, with Sydney dominating the list.

The report analysed the Australian dating landscape among singles aged 20–49 and noted geographic imbalances nationwide.

Ray White senior data analyst, Atom Go Tian, said the Australian dating landscape “would make even Cupid take notes”.

“The search for romance faces unique geographical challenges: regional Western Australia tops the charts with 124 single men for every 100 single women, followed by regional South Australia with 117,” Go Tian said.

“This romantic imbalance likely stems from the resources boom, with Western Australia hosting over a third of Australia’s 350+ mining sites.”

On the other hand, the Northern Territory was the only region where women outnumbered men.

Sydney ranked highest among capital cities, showcasing 13 suburbs with the most singles.

Melbourne followed with six suburbs, while Adelaide and Brisbane each had one suburb.

Australia’s most concentrated bachelor population is in Sydney’s inner south-west suburb of Lakemba, which recorded 252 single men for every 100 single women.

The current median house price in Lakemba now reaches over $1.32 million.

Sydney’s Wiley Park, with a median house price of $1.27 million, ranked second on the top 10 suburbs with the most bachelors, recording 196 single men for every 100 single women.

“Sydney’s dominance in the bachelor scene is clear, with its inner south-west and inner west regions claiming half of Australia’s top 10 male-majority suburbs,” Go Tian said.

In comparison, seven of the country’s top 10 suburbs with a female majority are in Sydney, with five located in the prestigious eastern suburbs and two in North Sydney.

Double Bay and Darling Point shared first place in the ranking, with 67 single men for every 100 single women, with a median house price of $4.53 million.

Woolhara followed suit with a similar ratio of 67 single men for every 100 single women, but with a slightly lower median house price of $4.19 million.

“Sydney presents a fascinating romantic geography: with male-dominated suburbs in the inner west and female-majority areas in the east, love might just be a bridge (or tunnel) away,” Go Tian said.

He said while Sydney is the city of choice for singles, Melbourne emerged as a notable hub for single men and women with six suburbs.

For single ladies, Melbourne recorded two inner-city contributions: Elwood and Port Melbourne, with a median price of $2.2 million and $1.7 million, respectively.

Melbourne’s south-east also emerged as a notable bachelor paradise, ranking fourth among the top 10 suburbs with the most single men.

“The property landscape in these bachelor-dense areas shows remarkable diversity, ranging from the more accessible Melbourne suburb of Doveton at $613,717 to the upscale Strathfield-East in Sydney commanding $3 million,” Go Tian said.

For buyers looking for both love and affordability, Go Tian said Yarrabilba in Brisbane is the standout location with a median house price of $703,643, “offering a unique opportunity in an otherwise premium-priced landscape”.
