Darwin set to be ‘oil and gas capital’
Darwin is set to become the ‘oil and gas capital of northern Australia’ after an INPEX investment announcement in the region, according to the chief minister.
The Darwin resource boom has been given a boost with a $3 million investment agreement between INPEX’s Ichthys LNG Project and Charles Darwin University, announced yesterday.
The agreement, pledging multi-million dollar training to Northern Territory students in the fields of Oil and Gas, is a sign of confidence for both employment and continued economic growth, according to chief minister Paul Henderson.
“We are about to go through a period of economic growth that will bring opportunities for high-wage high-skill jobs for Territorians,” Mr Henderson said.
The Ichthys project is a $34 billion investment in the region.
"This excellent education facility will help train our own highly skilled workers and play an important part in securing Darwin as the oil and gas capital of northern Australia.
"Construction of the North Australian Centre for Oil and Gas is already underway and is expected to be able to take its first students as early as end of the 2012."
