Premier Jacinta Allan and Minister for Housing Harriet Shing have announced that over 800 “modern and safe homes” are set to be delivered across Hampton East, Banksia Gardens and Barak Beacon.

With Victoria undergoing the largest annual population growth of all Australian states, the assessment and approval of these housing projects by the Minister of Planning Sonya Kilkenny brings the state a step closer to achieving the Housing Statement target of building 800,000 new homes by 2034.

“These projects across Melbourne will deliver hundreds of beautiful, modern, well-designed new homes for families to call their own,” Shing said.

In these housing redevelopments, the Victorian government relayed that “more than 65 per cent of the homes will be social and affordable housing”, and in locations “all close to the public transport, schools, shops and services Victorians rely on”.

“More places you can afford, more choices for you and your family that’s what we’re delivering around Victoria,” Allan stated.

Hampton East:

The 285 homes scheduled for development at Bluff Road in Hampton East have been reported as a a “mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes”.

Of these homes, 200 units have been designated as social and affordable housing, which would lead to a 16 per cent increase of social housing on the site.

Broadmeadows:

All of the more than 120 units at Banksia Gardens in Broadmeadows are set to be social and affordable housing units, leading to a 10 per cent increase in social housing on the site.

Upon the delivery of these homes in 2026, the Victorian government said that “all other pre-existing homes on the Banksia Gardens site will be renovated and modernised”.

Port Melbourne:

The redevelopment at Barak Beacon in Port Melbourne will provide 408 new homes for local residents, with the 200 units designated as social and affordable houses, representing a 46 per cent increase in social housing on the site.

Notably, these homes will be located within four buildings which will vary from two to 11 storeys in height; these specifications being detailed as “keeping with the character of Port Melbourne” which contains a range of medium density buildings.

These approvals follow the Victorian government’s recent announcement that they will look to incorporate the local knowledge of its councils in achieving the state’s future housing goals.
