Property owners will soon be allowed to build a second dwelling on their land in a move from the Northern Territory Government to solve a housing shortageential dwellings.
The ‘Dual Occupancy’ plan will open up nearly 3,000 blocks for development.
Chief minister Paul Henderson said that the relaxing of subdivision laws would help an economy underpinned by resource projects set to “turbo-charge” the region to meet growth pressures.
“The Territory is going through a high growth phase, and we need to be flexible when it comes to our housing market.”
This would be part of a strategic housing package that has already rolled out an extension to the Build Bonus scheme until June 30, as well as increased temporary housing options throughout the territory.
“These are carefully planned initiatives developed in line with the Territory 2030 strategy to maintain our enviable lifestyle and offer affordable, appropriate housing to meet the needs of all Territorians and our short-term guests.”
