With 116 renters already having received housing through a new Queensland government initiative, more investors are now being urged to join the program.

State Minister for Communities and Housing Leeanne Enoch said they are “calling on home owners across the state to help Queenslanders in need by putting forward an expression of interest to lease their property as part of Help to Home”.

The minister stated that being part of Help to Home would allow home owners to be part of the solution to the housing challenges facing our state.

“Help to Home is a great way for eligible Queensland home owners to lend a home and help out people in their community who need housing,” she said.

She outlined that expressions of interest are still open for vacant, stand-alone houses, and single or multi-unit properties that may be new to the market or not previously available for rent.

Short-term or holiday accommodation or a property that has previously been used for commercial purposes would also be considered for the scheme.

Since the program’s launch four months ago, 116 “vulnerable” individuals have accessed the program, with Ms Enoch considering it as “an encouraging sign” that sets the state up well to deliver more homes through the initiative.

The Help to Home scheme has been applauded by Mangrove Housing chief executive Teresa Reed for “its ability to generate supply in a very tight housing market”.

She believes the initiative “will improve the lives of some of the most marginalised members of our community”.
