5 interior decorating trends to avoid in 2018

When selling a property or bringing in tenants, your property should be appealing as possible. Here are stylist Justine Wilson’s top five trends to avoid in 2018 to make sure you don’t repel any interested parties.

Justine Wilson

1. Rose gold

All that glitters is not rose gold anymore! While metallics are still on trend for 2018, rose gold will be the shade that you will see far less often.

It has certainly had its heyday from everything to tap ware, accessories and furniture, however 2018 will see a shift to true gold, brushed gold and antique gold. Silver will also be on trend and has been for several years, but think shiny chrome over brushed minimalist finishes.

2. Scandi overload

All neutral, all oak, all the same timber hue is what we have come to embrace as the Scandi look. The Nordic simple and light oak look has been dominant but is on its way out in 2018.

The retro lines are still in but the wood stain will be black or dark walnut, more mid-century in colour tone than light or whitewashed oak.

The Scandi trend really flooded the market in 2017 and now it has finally lost its momentum because every retailer has been offering the same look. You’ll also see a shift to generally more eclectic-looking pieces gathered in a room set up, instead of just one style furniture being dominant.

3. Pastels accents

Year 2018 will be about dark, luxe, moody, rich colours, emerald, plum, navy, mustard, so the pretty and airy pinks, soft blues and yellows will start to fade away in soft furnishings and more dramatic tones will be the choice.

4. Watercolour artwork

A big trend in 2017, watercolour abstract prints were everywhere! Coupled with an oak-framed, always muted tones, always soft and pretty, but I predict a surge of bold artworks with lots of texture, thick black frames and even black and white photography with opulent gold antique look frames.

5. Horses, deers and owls, oh my!

Horse and dear and owl motifs were easy to find in 2017, however, the animals of 2018 will most likely be fierce creatures!

Think the year of the wolf, tribal or African animals, leopards, cheetahs along with bold black and gold patterns and animal motifs to match.
